Maverick takes his job and responsibilities as a coach seriously. He pushes his students hard in weekly training and sparring. Maverick praises a job well done, especially those above and beyond normal training. But, if a monster is clearly not training properly or is being lazy, he will express his displease with his student. Maverick can tell the difference between a monster doing their best and it just not working out and a monster who has no interest in training that week. If a monster just can't seem to get it right, especially a younger one, he will gently work with them and build up their confidence and strength.

In sparring, Maverick gives his all to the fight. However, he will hold back with younger monsters, such as not using his powerful electric attack, Bolt. Sparring is meant to teach, not to simply defeat the students. That doesn't mean he goes easy on them, but uses it to show them their weakness and increase the stats of the breeder's choice.

Since he is a coach contracted out by AGIMA, sometimes he has other duties besides training monsters, such as keeping an eye on the ruins to make sure the wild monsters aren't being too aggressive.

He is loyal and cares about his breeder. Even though they've gone their separate ways, he still checks on them from time to time.

Because of his missing right eye, Maverick doesn't like it when anyone stands on that side of him to talk. Even though he can't see on that side, it's hard to sneak up on him since he uses his senses of smell and hearing to tell if someone's approaching.

He can come off gruff at first, but that's because he's focused on his job. He has everyone's best interests at heart, he just sometimes is a little blunt. It takes a little time for him to warm up to someone. He knows all of the other coaches and he's friendly with them. Sometimes they'll even swap training techniques and stories on their off hours.

Age Island is a place where most humans and monsters live in peace together.

Just about every part of life revolves around raising monsters to battle in the arena. Even if people do not raise monsters for battle, they can still make money by offering goods or services to monster breeders, such as building and remodeling barns, selling items that affect monsters, working at the monster Hospital, and many different other jobs that are present on the island.

AGIMA (Age Island Monster Association) regulates most of the activities related to raising monsters. They offer coaches for hire to help train monsters, sparring practice, and set up tournaments for monsters to battle each other. They also arrange expeditions to the ruins for breeders and their monsters.

There are tournaments going on at the arena nearly every week. Most of the time they're minor tournaments, but sometimes they hold special tournaments for rare prizes and the ranking tournaments to increase the winning monster's rank.

Every breeder has a small ranch that has plenty of space for a single monster. The ranch has a house for the breeder, a small barn (it can be remodeled to bigger sizes to hold bigger monsters), and equipment to train monsters. There often is a pond present on the property.

Breeders obtain monsters by reading off of tablets at the shrine. Lower ranked breeders can only read off a few letters, while higher ranked ones can read off even more. The same combination of letters will always generate the same monster. Certain monsters can only be brought home to the breeder's ranch if they've won specific items from special tournaments.

There are quite a few measurements put in place by AGIMA to keep inexperienced breeders from getting over their head with monsters that are too powerful. First, they start off with a small barn that cannot hold larger monsters. Once the breeder gets enough money, they can pay to remodel the barn to have space for larger monsters if they desire. Secondly, breeders starting out can only read off a few letters from a tablet. As they increase in rank with their monsters, they are allowed to read more letters. Many of the stronger monsters require a larger amount of letters to generate. Finally, some monsters can only be generated if the breeder has obtained their items from special tournaments set aside to give them to the winner. There's also some monster breeds that must be found in other ways aside from generating them.

For the most part, humans and monsters live in harmony. However, sometimes wild or stray monsters will attack ranches. Usually they're carrying an item, so perhaps they were stealing from another ranch. Sometimes monsters raised by breeders will bring items to their breeder or run away if their breeder is too harsh. It's possible that the stray monsters are just monsters who wish to bring a present to their breeder or they're violently taking out their anger for their breeder on other ranches.

The ruins are usually full of wild monsters that will attack humans and monsters that explore the area. However, sometimes after they're defeated, the monsters will become more friendly towards the monster that defeated them. The ruins can be a dangerous place and sometimes very strong monsters will take up residence and cause trouble for anyone that happens to go in.

Age Island is not only populated by humans and monsters, but many other creatures as well, such as birds and frogs. It appears to be a lot like Earth, just with the addition of monsters and a society built around their use and presence.

The picture above shows Maverick sparring with a young monster. Since the monster is inexperienced, Maverick will not use his Bolt attack, instead he just relies on Bite and Scratch. When he faces stronger and older monsters, Maverick adds Bolt to his roster of attacks.

Maverick is a standard Tiger-type monster. This means he looks like a large wolf with blue and white fur. He's got two grey horns on the top of his head that are used to generate electricity for attacks such as Bolt.

Because a Dragon tore up his eye when he was a young monster, Maverick wears a black eye patch over his right eye. Other than that, nothing else really distinguishes him physically from any other fully-grown Tiger.

(Maverick's past is inspired by Monster Rancher Advance 2 and has a helping of headcanon mixed in. As the Monster Rancher Advance series appears to be over, the headcanon probably will not be changed by canon updates. However, if something does come up, the backstory will be adjusted.)

(Also, as a note, "breeder" is the term for anyone who raises a monster in the Monster Rancher world. They do not breed the monsters to other monsters, unless you count the optional fusion process that results in 2 monsters being combined into 1 new monster.)

Maverick and his breeder live on Age Island. The breeder that raised Maverick is an experienced breeder who had previously raised an S-rank monster to the highest it could go. Since AGIMA, the Age Island Monster Association, is always needing new coaches to train monsters that humans are raising, they often ask skilled breeders to prepare the coaches for them.

Mardoc, the chairman of AGIMA, brought Maverick right after he was regenerated from a Tablet and gave him to his breeder with the simple instructions to focus his abilities on Accuracy and Speed and once he reached B-rank, they'd take him and put him to work as a coach.

Maverick and his breeder got along well. His breeder probably spoiled him a little, occasionally giving him extra meat and letting him sleep in their bed when he was a puppy.

His training progressed nicely and he won a few minor tournaments before entering in the AGIMA Official E-Rank Championship.

The first opponent he faced was a Dragon-type monster whose breeder treated it cruelly. It's breeder used harsh training methods to raise strong monsters as quickly as possible. They had had trouble with monsters before, their training methods were so tough, that often their monsters would run away for weeks at a time. Their monsters were afraid of them, so they didn't lash out at their breeder.

The Dragon didn't have the courage to fight its breeder and had been growing increasingly frustrated and upset. This was it's first battle and as soon as it started, the Dragon went berserk and attacked Maverick more viciously than was allowed.

Its mighty claws tore up Maverick's right eye and the battle was immediately halted. It took several of the monsters owned by the arena to restrain it.

The officials overseeing the battle disqualified the Dragon and declared that his breeder was unprepared to raise it properly, so they took it away to retire it to a quiet place and put a temporary ban on the breeder, for several months, they couldn't raise any monsters, especially since they had had some trouble with them before.

It took Maverick a long time to recover in the Hospital. They couldn't save his eye, so he was given an eyepatch.

For quite a while, he was afraid of other monsters and battling. But with the gentle guidance of his breeder and the monster coaches they had hired, he calmed down and finally became okay again.

Since Accuracy was the main thing Mr. Mardoc had asked of Maverick, he worked hard to overcome his injury. While he's still fast, often times he'll think carefully and try to figure out his next move to be sure that it hits.

Finally he reached B-rank and was given back to AGIMA to be used as a coach. He drives his students hard, but fairly.

Maverick is an NPC coach in the game Monster Rancher Advance 2 that first appears in AGIMA (Age Island Monster Association) for hire in the 13th year in game time.

Maverick's one-time fee to contract him as a coach is 6,000 gold. This is a middle of the line fee, as the cheaper coaches are around 3,000 and the more expensive ones can be 10,000 or more. Super coaches cost 30,000 gold.

Coaches are hired out for 2-year contracts that can be renewed for many years for 800 gold every two years. Eventually a coach will move on to train other monsters, but can reappear in AGIMA for hire at a later date.

Monsters have to be at least a B-Rank in order to become a coach.

He's a pure Tiger monster type. Tiger type monsters are described as "What a cool monster!"

His stats are no different between the English and Japanese versions.

The CoachPTS are coach points that allow you to assign a coach to different training methods. Maverick can be assigned to 5 different ones at a time.

Coaches are better or worse at training monsters depending on their stats. The higher their stats, the more points the monster they're training gets in those stats. Even if a coach isn't suited for a particular type of training, they can still be assigned to it.

The training methods Maverick is best at are:

Blow (increases accuracy greatly, increases intelligence slightly, decreases speed slightly)
Evade (increases speed greatly, increases intelligence slightly, decreases defense slightly)
PinHead (increases accuracy greatly, increases power slightly, decreases defense slightly)
Log (increases speed greatly, increases life slightly, decreases power slightly)

The training methods Maverick aren't suited for are:

Flip (increases defense greatly, increases power slightly, decreases speed slightly)
BodyBlow (increases defense greatly, increases life slightly, decreases intelligence slightly)

The training methods Maverick is neutral at are:

SmashUp (increases power greatly, increases defense slightly, decreases intelligence slightly)

His stats seem to go along with a basic Tiger's natural abilities.

The main difference is that his Accuracy is higher than his Speed.

Tigers start out with the attacks Scratch and Bolt, Maverick adds Bite (and possibly Ice Bomb).
